Educational Grant
The Acton Garden Educational Grant program was established, initially, with memorial gifts in memory of longtime members Janet Bubier and Elinor Miller. This grant in the amount of $50-$500 is open to any full-time employee of the Town of Acton or any designated representative of a Town organization. It provides funds for horticultural or environmentally related programs or projects. The grant is available annually, subject to the approval of the Board of the Acton Garden Club. The Board determines the procedures for application and award. The Educational Grant Committee submits grants for financial and formal approval by the Board.
Two grants were given during the 2020-21 year. A grant for $375 was awarded to the Friends of the Acton Arboretum for a wheelchair accessible planter at the entrance of the Acton Arboretum. The plants will be changed out quarterly and accessible to all to assist with growing. In addition, an award of $125 was given to the Acton Memorial Library for children’s books on gardening, recycling and ecology.
One grant was given during the 2019-2020 year. The Acton Garden Club Educational Grant was awarded to Bettina Abe, Acton’s Natural Resource Assistant, to support the Monarch Research Project. Three locations, at NARA and the Acton Arboretum, will now have signage explaining this important project.
Two grants were given during the 2017-18 year. The Acton Memorial Library received $250 to support a horticulturist speaking on the benefits of birds, bees, and other insects in the garden. The West Acton Citizen’s Library received $250 to create a seed library for patrons. The grant will support the purchasing of seeds and books related to growing plants and the materials needed to allow for the “lending” of seeds.
